Size Doesn’t Always Matter – The Optimal Living Area Size in Feng Shui

Most people fantasize owning a huge mansion and consider it as a sign of social status and success. Indeed, sharing a room with other is not always a pleasant experience and it is a great pleasure to have ample living space. Be that as it may, is having the bigger house the merrier? In Feng Shui, the principal focus is about reaching an optimal state and it will do one no good if the house is too big for the owners who reside within.

Take bedroom as an example. The area one needs for bedding is more or less fixed. If the bedroom is too big, it will be more difficult for Chi (氣) to accumulate, which is bad for luck. Also, this lack of Chi will create a sense of insecurity. Visitors who have been to the Forbidden City are impressed by the magnificent palace. Yet, many overlook the fact that the emperor’s bedroom is unproportionately small when compared to others. Ancient architects purposefully built the bedroom this way to create the best living environment for the emperors. 
Hence, it is important for the size of house comparable to the number of residents. A way to enhance the Chi flow in a large house is to organize party or gathering on a regular basis. This will create a friendly feeling and enchance the Chi flow. Another solution to the problem is to keep active pets such as dogs and cats, which can also create a lively atmosphere.
